Include the papers of George Nicolson Johnson (1811-1855), a prominent lawyer in Richmond, Va., and his wife, Marguerite A.C. (Menzies) Johnson. George Nicolson Johnson materials include correspondence, 1819-1854, with friends and family members (particularly with his father, Chapman Johnson [1779-1849]) concerning family news and his early education in Staunton, Va.); correspondence, 1836-1853, with his wife Marguerite (including letters written during their courtship); and a license, 1843, issued by the U.S. Supreme Court permitting him to practice before the court. Marguerite A.C. (Menzies) Johnson materials include letters, 1841-1895, written to her by friends and family members primarily regarding family news; letters, 1895-1897, written to Marguerite Johnson concerning rental of real estate she owned in Indianapolis, Ind.; and accounts, 1895-1897, of Gregory & Appel of Indianapolis, Ind., regarding her rental property in Indianapolis. Also, include letters, 1852-1931, written by other members of the Menzies and Johnson families; questions, 1840, on Greek history and geography; and lines of verse.

Richmond, Va., lawyer George Nicolson Johnson was the son of Richmond lawyer Chapman Johnson (1779-1849). In addition to running a successful law practice, which included appearances before the Virginia and United States supreme courts, Johnson was active in the civic life of Richmond. He served as treasurer of the Virginia Historical Society, was a supporter of the Richmond Athenaeum, and was one of the original subscribers to and a vice president of the Richmond Library Company.
